The island of Ireland is politically divided into two separate jurisdictions:

The Republic of Ireland (Éire): A sovereign, independent nation that covers about five-sixths of the island. It is a member of the European Union.

Northern Ireland: The remaining one-sixth of the island in the northeast, which is part of the United Kingdom (as mentioned in our first chat).
